by hand. monday joy!

Perhaps today's activity is more something I savour than being joyful, but nevertheless today it has brought me pleasure. Restoring old blankets by hand is something I really enjoy.

Developing my skills at hand-stitching and darning is time-consuming, but rewarding. A long time ago I mentioned how much I enjoyed the hand-stitched elements. This is why I love rustic style blankets with patches and darned sections - little bits of imperfection that makes for character.

maeve.

Today I've got a lovely link to a good read. MAEVE magazine. Have you read it? I came across it about a month ago and am looking forward to their next issue.

Great to see more Australian talent coming together to produce an on-line magazine with local content and contributors. Here's a snippet from their profile...

"MAEVE appreciates that you are all grown up, that you are intelligent and street smart. That you are raising kids and creating a new generation. You have a desire for knowledge and a thirst for real life content. You want inspiration. You want to know what other people are doing and how they are doing it. How they are parenting. How they are achieving. How they are loving. How they are living. We all do it – it’s human nature. You want to see life in a state of fluidity. Full of flaws and controversy. Bursting with pride, success and failure. Naked ambition and true friendship. Hardship, sorrow and grief. Celebrations, milestones and mindfulness."

Enjoy!

rainbows & sunshine. monday joy!

video
Okay so the post title sounds quite airy fairy... but this morning we were blessed to wake up and see this literally at our front steps!*

The boys were pretty excited as you can see. So was I... there's been so much rain and greyness everyday... the sunshine was such a welcome sight.
Hope your week is off to a good start too!

*oh dear, the movie quality via blogger is not very good :( boo.

nearly there. nearly here.

It's nearly there. Coming along rather nicely in fact. Time for a re-fresh, some extra colour in my world and my spaces here on-line.

And soon it will be here.

was it the mouse? monday joy!

who sank the boat?*

well not quite, but there were five people in that little sparrow and one towed behind ... the clearance isn't much at all. lucky the water was only four foot deep.

another great day on the water!

tallyho. friday finds.

This week's find is an amazing collection of Navy insignia, and in particular these vintage TALLY BANDS. Together with a variety of RATES (embroidered patches) they were found at Auction in 2011.

WHY DO YOU LIKE THEM? They signify history and honour. Their utility style creates a very smart statement. I hope to further their service and bring them out on display instead of them being hidden away in a plastic bag in a dark cupboard.

HOW TO USE? These tally bands have a bright future...

Here is another peek at the upcoming collection of restored blankets & drawstring bags for autumn/winter 2012. A simple collection is underway with rustic textures yet attention to detail. They will feature vintage tally bands across two-tone drawstring bags and patches added to blanket corners. Available in the shop from Monday March 19th.

NB. I want to assure you that I have obtained clearance from Navy Personnel to use these historical items in this manner. If you have any queries, please feel free to contact me by email.

colenimo. faraway talent.

Here's some 'oooh-wow' for a late thursday afternoon. I will let the images of superb craftsmanship by colenimo speak for themselves. You can view their lookbook here and I must warn you that browsing their site takes you on a trail of awesome - with links to their stockists around the world, and their past lookbooks here.
Designer and founder Aya Nakagawa is one lady I'd sure like to spend a day with.

"Taking inspiration from the [Paper Moon] film's tomboy protagonist, the collection is comprised of simple unpretentious shapes, underpinned by a playfully confident sense of style."
Spring/summer 2012.

Take your time and enjoy.

reflections. monday joy!

This post is a day belated - not because I didn't have anything to write about, but due to the fact that our district was hit by another round of strange weather indeed.

On Sunday evening a very intense low system started dumping heavy rains and sending very strong winds across the coast. By yesterday morning our little town was flooded again for the second time in as many weeks. Apparently the system had all the ingredients of a cyclone, but it was not officially stated as such. So, here I am today, thankful for being safe and dry, but saddened to see so many affected again in this awful weather.
---
The thing that brought joy this week was an afternoon spent in the upper reaches of the Noosa river. We took our swimmers and blow up boat and rowed ourselved across. All four of us in the tiny boat. I must say I was reluctant at first to hop into the boat and risk the cold darkish waters, but I was rewarded with the sense of calm that comes from being in a quiet, beautiful space shared with my family.

These images were taken at various times as the afternoon sun faded, but you can see the stunning reflections of the sky created in the everglades where the waters are stained dark by the tea tree leaves.

This is my favourite one, with the clouds like an impressionist painting.

I hope you are finding some joy this week in the everyday.

small linens. friday finds.

Like our recent post on white linens, today we have some gorgeous napkins and other small linens which are also very usable.

WHY DO YOU LIKE THEM?
Small quality linens are classic addition to a home that loves vintage styling. Dinner napkins, hankies, tray mats, doilies and duchess sets, lend themselves to creating a hint of vintage without being too over-the top.
I also love the detail in the hand-stitched ones - especially the cross stitch patterns that were applied to so many dinner napkins. Such a reflection of patience, skill and persistence in the character of the person that created them.

WHAT TO DO? If you're ever short on ideas for using vintage materials and linen pieces head over to dottie angel who is bursting with vintage-happy stitching.
But if you are looking for something a little more understated, simply pin some together with safety pins and create a small sheer curtain for a window, OR stitch some onto herringbone tape and create reusable party decorations.
Otherwise, simply use them as-is. They really do add a special touch to a dinner setting on special occasions, and you can be confident that most food stains will soak out.

IN THE SHOP. These two sets of linen napkins, along with few more will be in the shop on Monday next week.
PS. Our new autumn collection of vintage blankets are coming soon. More details next week.
